Deemed “a story of great sweetness and sadness and lots of fun along the way” and “an exceptional read” by a judge in the Writer’s Digest Self-Published ebook Awards, Tuesday’s Caddie is painted against a rich backdrop of Depression era Hollywood and the exclusive Biarritz Country Club where poor caddies and wealthy members work and play together yet inhabit separate worlds..
Into this world walks young Conor O’Reilly. An Irish immigrant whose small cafe failed in the crash of ’29, he still burns to make his mark and become one of the elite he now serves. He soon meets beautiful Annie Burke, wife of noted screenwriter Franklin Burke, whose marriage is but a sham. Despite their vastly different lives and backgrounds, Conor and Annie fall in love as he caddies for her each Tuesday on Ladies’ Day.
Out of the blue Conor is offered a chance to make real money when he’s enlisted to play in the annual Biarritz Calcutta golf tournament where fabulous sums of money are wagered on two-man teams. His partner is Billy Compton, a rich playboy with a penchant for getting into trouble. Their adventures together almost cost them their chance before the event. It’s at the Calcutta tournament where fate and fortunes good and ill all collide. Conor and Annie’s story is interrupted for decades until fate again brings them together with truths to be reckoned with.
The book is replete with vibrant portrayals of the places and the people of the times. From the grandeur of Hollywood mansions and the life of the rich to the squalor and wantonness of Tijuana during prohibition, the era in captured in vivid detail. But, in the end, Tuesday’s Caddie is a story of enduring love and painful loss, the attainment of dreams and the rejection of dreams gone wrong. It is about love that lasts a lifetime and beyond.

Young Conor O'Reilly comes to America, seeking his fortune through hard work and savvy. Then the Depression knocks him for a loop and he ends up as a country club caddie. Beautiful Annie Burke is trapped in a loveless marriage to a famous Hollywood screenplay writer. But he's a phony; Annie does the real writing. And while she's doing just that, he's out catting around. It doesn't take her long to catch on, though, and she kicks him out of her bed. But she doesn't dare divorce him, believing it's his name that sells the scripts. Bored and lonely, Annie takes up golf. Her caddie, of course, is Conor. They are meant for each other, but he doesn't feel good enough for her, and she's married. It took me awhile to get use to the author's sparse punctuation, but the deeper I got into the story the harder it was to put down. I think it's movie material, and I almost feel guilty for having gotten a free copy.

In the beginning, I wasn't sure what the story was about. As it went on, the different stories began to weave together into a beautiful love story. To experience love like that, then have it snatched away requires an inner core of strength to go on living. And to find one another again, to be so close, yet unable to come together again had to be very painful. Good if you are a romantic.
Good read a love story with a good theme. The golf Inc!uded makes it fun. Would recommend as an easy to read romance.
This book is a great reminder of how golf is a metaphor for life. Many things happen on or around a golf course or because of golf. I'm not sure I'm the target demographic for this book, but I enjoyed and I still can't figure out if this is a golf book with a love story or a love story within a golf book.
A fabulous book about the eternal nature of love! As a lifetime reader there are few books that stay with you, this is one of those. You 'll sigh and cry just like I did! Bravo Mr Waddell, this is a treasure ( hope they make it into a screenplay!).
Didn't know what to expect when I started reading Tuesday's Caddie. I am a huge golf fan and have played golf in Ireland (at Lahinch). At first I felt the attraction between the caddie and the rich cosmopolitan married woman was predictable. But to my pleasant surprise the story developed with several twists and turns. I can't reveal the ending but cudos to the author. Well done.
It gets deep, fast and in a hurry.
Real life sometimes happens this way, although we hope it don't. You won't regret spending the time reading this.
I really liked this book. I can't believe it was a free offering. It was well written and I could feel the pain and passion of the characters. There was a reality to the story. It was not a typical, predictable romance.

This had it all for me An Irishman who plays golf, a woman who plays too, rich versus poor, and, of course, a love connection. The ending, however, is not the usual romance conclusion, but rather what sometimes happens in reality. Get the tissues! This one has a way of lingering in your head after you have finished it.

I think this would make a great movie, but I guess a free book doesn't have much chance of that. The story line is so much better than some of the inane movies we get nowadays. This reminded me of "The Bridges of Madison County." If you liked "Bridges" you'll love "Tuesday's Caddy."
