The History of England in Three Volumes VolI Part A From the Britons of Early Times to King John David Hume Books

Previously, my only knowledge of David Hume was from the Monty Python "Philosopher Song". I frankly wasn't sure how accurate a history written over 200 years ago without our present-day access to Wikipedia and so on might be. But having just finished "The Last Kingdom" by Bernard Cornwell and knowing very little about that era of history, I wanted to learn more.
It may be true that "David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hegel", but he could also write, and what's more, his research seemed to be chiefly based on research of sources contemporary to the events in his history (with references). The history focuses chiefly on the monarchies and religious/political structures of the birth of England, and there is good coverage of the development of England's class system. I recommend this book to students of history, but I think it is more than accessible to even the casual reader.

The History of England in Three Volumes VolI Part A From the Britons of Early Times to King John David Hume Books Reviews

It's fine for a history buff like me but would be way too dry for just a "reading book"; this is more of a college textbook than a reader. However, it was exactly what I was looking for so I'm glad I got it!
Horribly boring and lengthy. Needs a proofreader and editor! Too too many commas and other punctuation marks. Run-on sentences. Misspellings.
Dry, but useful reference material.
Hume is a writer who people love or hate. I don't mind his writing style or his views, but I can see why some would.

Hume starts with the early days of England, as he knew them at the time. The series is definitely worth reading for a history buff

8,565 locations long.
The text itself can't be faulted. Of course the language is very dated, but that's to be expected. The footnotes all appear in odd places, perhaps where they were found in the print edition.

As a work of history, it is somewhat judgmental. The Germanics and Saxons are frequently described as barbaric and lacking all social graces, compared to the 'refined' Normans and French.

I found Appendix 1 'THE ANGLO-SAXON GOVERNMENT AND MANNERS' to be very long winded but as it is an appendix it could be quite easily skipped without missing out on the story line.
I'm enjoying reading this book (not finished). It's easy to read, but not brainless. It covers not only kings/queens/wars, but also culture, religion and other events in Europe happening at the same time. Interesting read. I would defiantly recommend. This book was written close to 200 years ago and I appreciate that point of view from the author.

The format is a bit awkward I'm guessing from translating to the kindle version.
This fascinating tome is written in formal English which may be daunting to the current generation of English readers. I found utter fascinating, the English have a right to be proud of their history and traditions. It allows the reader to see the evolution of a nation to its glorious peak. This is a book full of detailed battles and conquests, reaching into the annals if history not often frequented by the modern reader.
